Everyone has heard that expression before. But have you really thought about what it means? Surprise, sadness, fear, disgust, happiness, and anger are considered as facial expressions that are universal by nature. However currently experts have been arguing that facial expressions that convey embarrassment and contempt are also universal by nature.
2. Eye contact
We initiate eye contact in order to focus on the target we want to talk to. We would like their attention and they would like ours if they are interested or attentive to the conversation.
3. Touch
When feeling uncomfortable, men prefer to touch their face. Women on the other hand, prefer to touch their neck, clothing, jewelry, arms and hair.
4. Thumb sucking
It means the person is stressed, relieving that, and/or thinking out of mind.
5. Improper eye contact
However, eye contact doesn't always stay in the same all the time. Not maintaining proper eye contact means someone is not paying attention, distracted, or avoidant.
6. Rubbing hands
Rubbing their hands together generally means that a person has a positive feeling about something.
7. Crossed arms
Usually, when someone crossed their arms whilst they were in the process of talking, the message is likely to be avoidant and defensive. This may indicate a sign of self-protection and a lack of openness during the conversation.
8. Squint eyes
When people see what they don't like, feel threatened or are unhappy, they squint their eyes.
9. Imitation
As you engage in a conversation, do you find the person in front of you is copying your gesture? If that's the case, it is usually because of an unconscious attempt to bond the relationship between you.
10. Raised eyebrows
When we raise our eyebrows, it means we are contemplating what we're listening to and that we're mildly intrigued.
11. Lean forward
When someone starts to lean forward slowly as you talk, there is a likelihood that they are interested in your speech. The reason they lean forward is that they would like to learn more about your opinions and thoughts.
12. Swinging from heels to toes shows that a person is anxious about something.
13. Slouch
In certain situations, such as a group talk or interview, some of us may sometimes feel overwhelmed or intimidated. If you happen to see someone's shoulders shrink or slouch rather than sitting up straight. It is possible for that person to feel afraid or even unmotivated.
14. Arms akimbo
Planting your hands with your thumps backward on your hips and elbows out in a 'V' shape displays dominance or authority.
15. Blink
Blinking is one of the crucial things to recognize as well. If someone is blinking excessively, again, there may be a chance that someone has just finished telling you a lie, which is called "rebound blinking"
16. Chin in hand
When someone puts their chin in their hands, they're presenting that face as if they're trying to say 'This is me'.
17. Stiffness
With the tension in the limbs and other body parts and limited mobility, there is a probability that someone is lying. They are usually trying to hide something since they do not want anyone to find out.
18. Nodding
During a conversation, if someone is nodding excessively, it means that either they're worried about what you think of them or they're doubtful about their ability to follow your instructions.
19. Blushing
Depending on the context, a red face may usually mean shyness or embarrassment. However, it may also imply someone is holding a "flight or fight" mechanism, which consists of hostility and anger.
20. Lip movement
Usually, when someone is looking for a romantic relationship, they will typically smack or lick their lips to show more desire of wanting that person. This phenomenon also exists in primates when they are sexually attracted to their mate.
