A CAT'S BRAIN IS MORE SIMILAR TO A HUMAN BRAIN AND THEY HAVE IDENTICAL REGIONS RESPONSIBLE FOR EMOTIONS.
According to researches at Tufts University School of Veterinary medicine, cats and humans have almost identical brain structures.Specifically in the region which controls emotion. The human brain and the cat brain both have cerebral cortices with similar lobes.
Cats brain measures about two inches, weighs between 0.9 to 1.1 ounces and occupies about 0.9% of their body mass, compared to about 2% in an average human. Cat's brain structure and surface folding is 90% similar to that of humans.
➡ Just like humans, cats have temporal, occipital, frontal and parietal lobes in their brains. Additionally, cat's brain also contain grey and white matter and the connections within their brains seem to mirror those of humans.
➡ Cats have more nerve cells in the visual areas of their brain, a part of the cerebral cortex (where rational decision making, planning, memory, language processing and complex problem solving takes place), than humans and most mammals. "Thats why,for instance your cat races from one end of the house to the other chasing a speck of dust that you don't even see. It's on a mission"
➡ Cats seem to think in the same way as humans do, partly owing to the similarity of neurotransmitters, which are used in conveying data. Cats recieve input from the basic five senses and process that, just as humans do.
➡ Memory is how the brain stores, recalls and uses information learned from past experiences. Like us, cats also have short and long term memory function and did you know that cats can recall information from up to 16 hours in the past?
➡ Like humans, cats learn by observation and doing. As an example, opening the doors, ringing the bell etc. This is technical memory and cats can excel at it. Research shows that memories last 10 years or more.
➡ While cats may not be able to appreciate colors as much as we do, they can keep tabs on objects in motion far better than we can.Color vision is not really important for them.
➡ Just as humans, advancing age may affect memory in cats. Some cats may experience a weakening of both learning ability and memory. That affects them adversely in ways similar to those occuring in aging humans. Mostly short term memory is more affected with aging.
➡ Cats lose brain cells as they age, like humans do.
With a good understanding of cat's intelligence, you and your pet cat can form a bond for many years.
